KETORET is the Hebrew word for "incense" and is an acronym for the words Sanctity, Purity, Mercy and Hope (Midrash Tanhuma). The Almighty said: "Of all the sacrifices you offer, there is none dearer to Me than ketoret [incense]". The priests who had burnt incense at the Temple became profusely wealthy and it was thus determined by law that every priest would be allowed to burn incense only once to allow others to enjoy the great riches heralded by the rite. As the burning of incense was such a pivotal part of the Temple rituals, the passage should be recited thrice daily, twice in the morning and once in the evening. The incense is as important as prayer as the latter came to replace and symbolize the sacrifices offered in the Temple, of which, it is said, the incense is the most cardinal one. Incense has thus been considered the best possible blessing for the purification of one's sins. Parashat HaKetoret appears in every siddur and The Zohar, which also emphasizes the importance of reciting the prayer for its great redeeming and healing powers. Stressing the great physical and conceptual role of the ketoret, the Midrash also stresses the great powers of the prayer in saving lives and offering blessings: "The incense is always before the Almighty". The Blessings of Parashat HaKetoret: The section, written on parchment, is a miraculous blessing for good livelihood and all salvations. As Moses said to Aaron: "Take a censer and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them" (Numbers 16, 46). Thus, as the Torah tells us: "Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people" (Numbers 16, 47). The angel of death was thus averted with the help of the sacred ketoret. The Unique Gifts of Parashat HaKetoret: • The blessing banishes the angel of death from one's home • The blessing proffers graciousness on all who recite it • The blessing offers redeeming powers • The blessing heals the sick • The blessing should be recited for the ascent of the soul • The blessing protects mourners • The blessing assists in finding a good match as it connects the higher worlds with the lower ones and bestows plenty from above • The blessing's greatest gift is abundant livelihood • In times of difficulty and distress the blessing should be uttered in synagogue with great concentration and focus. The marvelous powers of the words will reverse ones fortunes. As written in the Zohar (VaYikhal): If men would know the virtue of bringing incense before the Almighty, they would guard it and place every tiny bit of it on their head like a golden crown. Parashat Haketoret thus encapsulates profuse spiritual and material treasures.
